

His Ares fire ability blasts enemies away, making it function similar to Nemean caeustus magic attack from god of war 3, except it hits in a 360 degrees this time. Everything is amped to 11 to compensate for the fact that kratos only has 4 magic uses at maximum. There is also the magic in this game which is incredible. Oath stone of Orkos, grants Kratos the ability to summon a shadow double, who attacks enemies and launches them in the air for an extended period of time(he is active for around 10 seconds), so if used tactically, kratos can focus on larger threats with the amulet of ouroborous, and activate the Oath stone to target the grunt enemies that may interrupt Kratos. The amulet of Ouroboruos is amazing as it allows Kratos to instantly launch a target, and stun all nearby enemies in acone, as well as slow them down, makng it so Kratos can quickly build up rage, or go aerial and take out a single target safely. The side abilities in this game are also amazing.

The regular aerial combos/go to moves(Cyclone of chaos, etc) have been changed to now generate much less rage, so now the player also has to judge if its more important to try to get extra orbs from comboing opponents, or to stay grounded to generate rage to then gain the extra orbs from rage abilities. The game also incentivizes playing on the ground and using light attacks, as light attack finishers generate massive amounts of rage, and grounded attacks generate much more rage than aerial attacks. The only key thing is kratos must keep up his offense and not receie damage to keep said rage, encouraging skilled strategic play. There is also the incredible rage mechanic, which gives kratos specia, VERY usefull effects upon finishing his combos, as well as allowing him access to both Magic regeneration and extra magic abilities, a larger moveset, along with amped versions of preexisting moves(His flame of ares L1+triangle gets an additional Olympic ascension added at the end, and reduced endlag for example, and his L1+Triangle zeus attack basically turns into the zeus magic attack, without the I frames),(The lightning rage ability is the eye of atlantis from Ghost of sparta, Hades is The army of hades from God of war 1, the fire one is entirely unique and alows the player to target a slower moving enemy in the center of a group to explode, damaging the rest of the group, and the ice one is also unique and allows for the player to target a difficult enemy and heavily restrict their movement, allowing Kratos to quickly and SAFELY kill them).

His golden fleece was replaced by a player activated parry that could be activated out of block, but cannot block after, resulting in a high risk high reward, as if you parry enemies in this game it completely destroys most of the attackers in game(on grunt enemies it actually results in an instakill). Kratos angles his blades to target enemies above and below him, and has a tethered grab, allowing him to tether to an enemy and continue attacking, then using the enemy as a weapon when enemies grow too close for kratos, it also allows kratos to be able to grab enemies farther away and in the air, or even target aerial/grounded targets while on the floor/in the air, making him far more of powerhouse who can control the flow of battle. However, just using the Blades of Chaos has never felt better. I would put it second behind God of war 3, as this game lacks the weapon variety and utility seen in God of war 3 and (2018).

It has some of the best combat this series has to offer. This game mechanically was incredibly sound. The story was worse than the others, but it was nice to see Kratos human side, as he actively puts in effort to keep strangers alive in this game.
